Postintubation Tracheal Stenosis: Case Report and Review of Current Management
نویسندگان
چکیده
Tracheal stenosis is an uncommon but serious complication of prolonged intubation and tracheostomy patients. Treatment is often provided by otorhinolaryngologists or interventional pulmonologists, but because symptoms may not appear for weeks or months after extubation, primary care physicians are frequently the first to encounter this complication. On presentation, tracheal stenosis may be mistaken for asthma with dyspnea and stridor. Presented is the case of a 53year-old woman who was referred to the otorhinolaryngologist with post-intubation tracheal stenosis and underwent a series of surgical procedures to repair her airway including tracheal resection and anastomosis. The common presenting signs, treatment options, and prevention strategies for similar patients are examined.

The most common cause of airway stenosis is prolonged intubation. Postintubation stenosis may be a delayed onset and may progress gradually. Endoscopic assessment and deciding to do a tracheostomy after 7 days is advised in adults. Segmented resection and primary anastomosis is the most effective modality of treatment for complete or near-complete tracheal stenosis. Surgeon’s ability for re...
متن کاملDifficult airway and difficult intubation in postintubation tracheal stenosis: a case report and literature review
Management of a "difficult airway" remains one of the most relevant and challenging tasks for anesthesiologists and pulmonary physicians. Several conditions, such as inflammation, trauma, tumor, and immunologic and metabolic diseases, are considered responsible for the difficult intubation of a critically ill patient. In this case report we present the case of a 46-year-old male with postintuba...
متن کاملSurgical treatment of postintubation tracheal stenosis: Iranian experience of effect of previous tracheostomy
BACKGROUND Postintubation tracheal stenosis remains the most common indication for tracheal surgery. In the event of a rapid and progressive course of the disease after extubation, surgical approaches such as primary resection and anastomosis or various methods of tracheoplasty should be selected. We report our experience with surgical management of moderate to severe postintubation tracheal st...
متن کاملCase scenario: perioperative airway management of a patient with tracheal stenosis.
TRACHEAL stenosis is a rare but a life-threatening condition and is caused by congenital problems, postintubation injury, trauma, tracheal tumor, and compression of the trachea by tumor. Although accurate prevalence of this condition is unknown, an incidence of 4.9 cases per million per year is estimated for postintubation tracheal stenosis. A stenosis commonly occurs at the cuff of the tube (i...
